Bradshawe's Plaque

Plaza Blue Plaque Launch
Wednesday 6th of June was a big day for the Trust, the unveiling of a fourth Blue Plaque and the launch of the town's first Blue Plaque Guide.
The Heritage Trust, the Council and Stockport Express were all congratulated by the Worshipful Mayor June Somekh for having worked together to achieve such a momentous undertaking.
The Guide produced by Phil Rowbotham of the Trust is available free of charge from the Tourist Information Centre and can also be supplied in large print, Braille and audio versions. It is hoped that this will bring visitors into Stockport to view our varied history.
The Plaque could not be secured permanently onto the Plaza's facade as permission for listed buildings is a more complicated affair, but should be in place by the end of the Month.
A cake to commemorate the occasion was cut by Frank Galvin and the Plaza staff provided a most excellent buffet.
Four other Blue Plaques were on display and are yet to be put up, for Rostron's Brow, The Bulls Head, St. Petersgate Bridge and Houldsworth Working Men's Club
Kevin Dranfield and Phil Rowbotham, from the Trust have worked closely with Paul Mason and Fiona Bullock from the Council to make the whole thing possible.

Armoury Unveiling
The second of eleven new Blue Plaques was unveiled in Stockport on Saturday outside the Armoury.
It was performed by two Territorial soldiers who have just returned from their tour of duty in Iraq.
Attended by Councillor Sue Derbyshire as well as Frank Galvin from the Stockport Story Museum and members of the Heritage Trust.
The Cheshire Regiment Veterans put on a fine spread and warm hospitality.

Strawbery Studios Unveiling
Wednesday 2nd May saw the first of the Blue Plaque unveiling's. It was Strawberry Studios and the media were out in force.
It was advertised on GMR in the morning
Appeared on Channel M in the afternoon
and was featured on Granada Tonight at tea time.

and speeches were given by Julian Bromley, Peter Tattersal and the wife of one of the band 10cc.
The sun shone and the wine flowed, but the curtain was a little reluctant to come off.
All in all a successful launch thanks to Strawberry Studios for their hospitality and to Kevin, Phil and the council for all their hard work.

History Man
The Stockport Express (24/01/07) has a glowing article on the Trust and the Blue Plaque scheme. It is a bit misleading, however, so here is a clarification.
Kevin Dranfield is the Trust's Conservation Officer and chaired the Blue Plaque scheme meetings between the Trust and the Council.
The Trust's Chair is Jim Clare, who can be seen down our Heritage Centre most market days, organising the Trust and the Centre and is a fount of knowledge on historical matters.
The article implies that Kevin did a lot of sifting to derive the Blue Plaque nominations, when in fact he was meticulous in making sure all valid suggestions from the Trust, the Council and the public, went forward to the public vote. Kevin and the Council only eliminated impractical suggestions, such as where there is nowhere to position the plaque or where the site is inaccessible to public access.
The vote has been collected and will be announced once details, such as the cooperation of the owner, has been confirmed.

New Blue Plaque scheme unveiled
Stockport Heritage Trust has been working with Stockport Council to secure a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant for blue plaques for Stockport.
Stockport already has 15 blue plaques and these are dedicated to: Stockport Infirmary, Stockport Market, Air Raid Shelters, Castle Yard, Three Shires, Sir Joseph Whitworth, Sir Fredrick Calland Williams, Halliday Hill Farm, Underbank Hall, Fred Perry, Railway Viaduct, Marple Aqueduct, Woodbank Hall, the Old Rectory and Judge John Bradshawe.
Twenty-one additional people and places have been identified. The HLF grant will pay for 10 blue plaques, five of which are to be in the town centre to be included in heritage trail.
It is now up to Stopfordians to vote for their favourite plaques. The first 10 canidates have been published in the Stockport Express and on the Council's website.

Where was Sidney Gilliat born?
We know Sidney Gilliat was born in Edgeley and some think they know which street it was, but we don't have a specific address.If we could determine the address, it might become a candidate for a blue plaque.
Sidney Gilliat (February 15, 1908 – May 31, 1994) was a film director, producer and writer. He worked with Hitchcock. Of all his films, it is probably as producer, then finally as director, for four St Trinians films for which he is most famous.

New Blue Plaques
Earlier this year Stockport Council approached the Trust with the idea of giving the Borough some more Blue Plaques.
On June 21st members of the Trust met for the third time with Council Staff, as well as David Reid for the Heritage Library, to enable details to be agreed for a Lottery Grant to fund the scheme.
A short list of 25 possible sites will be put to the public vote, so that ten can be chosen and included, with the ones that already exist, in a new Town Blue Plaque Guide.
Voting will take place later this year and it is hoped that the Blue Plaques will be ready for fixing by April - May 2007.
